Round 8

Fraser Simpson (Toronto ON) vs. Vince Castellano (Fairfax, VA): TRAGICAL, INSPIRITS, CLOSURE, PEMIcANS. While I was watching, Fraser had Vince on "hold." All of a sudden he faced his tiles down and opted to challenge the last bingo. It as good, so Vince got another turn.

On a Ron Hoekstra (Kentwood, MI) vs. John Robertson (Cambridge ON) board, I see JULIENNES.

Jeff Parsons (Logy Bay NL) vs. Ross Brown (Kanata ON). I see Jeff's ALEATEs for 71, MURIATES for 64, and GARTEREd for 131 (trip-trip). Ross got down LOWLIER for 67. Jeff's win, 458-362.

Tim Anglin (Toronto ON) vs. Chris Williams (Vancouver BC): NOVELIZES.

Lou Cornelis (Ottawa ON) vs. Andrew Golding (Verdun QC): DIAGONALs.

I stop by table 1 and peer down at Chris Lipe's annotation machine. He seems to have lost his paper annotator and is just going direct into the laptop (which is how most annotation is done these days, but there is no substitute for learning on paper first or knowing how to back yourself up with paper annotation). Chris' machine is set so dim and with about an 8-point type that I can't see anything on it. Realizing he was now plugged in and didn't have to conserve battery power, he turned up the contrast. And wala, a game was going on under all that dimness!

Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON) vs. Lloyd Mills (Georgetown ON): STILBITeS and FORERUNS, played by Lloyd. Of this last bingo, he said, "I should have played FURANOSE, but this is sleep deprivation SCRABBLE. It is good practice in case I ever have to go off to war."

Jeremy Hildebrand (Ottawa ON) vs. Adam Logan (Waterloo ON). As I watch, Jeremy played OVOLI with the I upside down (numerical tile value in the wrong direction). He looks at it for several minutes before announcing his score and hitting his clock. And, Adam, a man after my own heart, reached out to do what I always do, too, when people orient tiles upside down, he turned it rightside up! I see that Adam opened with BoTONEE for 72, played SERENEST and RESAYINg through the N, and TWEEZE. Jeremy came back wtih GONADIC/TWEEZED for 94, but it wasn't enough and he lost.

Endgame rack for Andrew Golding (Verdun QC): TTTFGP. Endgame rack for Lou Cornelis (Ottawa ON): EIUIIEU.
