Awards Ceremony The good news for everyone but Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) is that by her NOT being in the finals tomorrow, we have someone to host the finals. John Chew, in particular, is happy about this, as Robin does such a good job! The awards ceremony began about 5 minutes after the last result slip was turned in, so most were able to hang around and see the prizes go out. With Mad Palazzo at his side, John thanked the staff and the volunteers and I daresay he remembered to mention everyone! The first prize awarded was, perhaps, the most important one to many there. The Mike Wise Memorial Good Sportsmanship Award. The players were constrained by two things: 1. they could not vote for someone who had received the prize before. 2. They could not vote for someone not at the event. With those two caveats, the players clearly picked one name: Salvatore Desiato (Toronto ON). His prize was a beautiful, round SamBoard. Sal was touched by the honor and posed for a photo at the front with his new loot. John and Mad then realized they had the wrong printout to figure out best performance on the days of the event and John asked if he could have 5 minutes to just figure it out. We all agreed and Mad proceeded to do a little soft shoe at the front of the room. Then, Lynda Wise (Toronto ON), sensing that we needed something else to distract us during this lull, took the to microphone and told a joke about cars/trucks/speed/and bathroom scales. By the time her punchline came, John was making his way back to the front of the room, to the podium. He was thankful for her intervention! The rest of the awards ceremony went quickly, with everyone present for their prizes except for Lloyd Mills (Georgetown ON). We gave everyone present a round of applause. Checks will be mailed out shortly from Hasbro Canada to the prize winners. So calling up names was more a formality than a presentation. The top 10 came up one by one and stood at the front to the right of John and Mad. When we got to the top two, everyone in the audience stood to applaud both David Boys (Dorval QC) and Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) for their strong showing. Tomorrow will be a fantastic finals!
