Round 5

We had two clock failures, at the very same time, this round. An Adjudicator 300 started putting Geoffrey Newman (Brampton ON) into severe overtime. In testing it, John Chew discovered that by touching it just once, Geoff went from -2 minutes overtime to -6 minutes. He hit the button again and Geoff was -9 mins. One more hit and poor Geoff was -92 minutes! Clearly, something was wrong. He got another timer situated and had them estimate time they each thought they had left and then the game proceeded.

At a nearby table, a SamTimer had a spontaneous restart in the middle of the game. Similarly, John got each of the players to agree on how much time they had left and set them up with a new timer, too. Can't say we aren't an equal opportunity clock failing event!

The hotel has been marvelous in helping us resolve our Internet issues, more specifically, their IT guy, Richard Danielli, has been on the case all morning. We have a new wireless to hook into and can now upload and download better. The hotel's general manager is a huge SCRABBLE fan with two kids into the game (one age 6 that plays SCRABBLE Jr.!). So, this place feels like a good place for us to be playing!

Max Panitch (Toronto ON) played David Boys (Dorval QC) this round. After Dave left the table to turn in their result slip, Max looked up at me and said, "I am not telling you the score of this game; it was ugly." I ask him for a play he enjoyed and he pointed to QUINOA and said, "just don't ask me to pronunce it!"

David Boys (Dorval QC) stops by and I mention how dashing he is looking these days, so distinguished with his salt and pepper hair. And he laughs and says, "Yeah, I hear that I look like all kinds of people. It has gone from Axel Rose, when I was much younger, to George Clooney comments now."

Fran Silver (Cote Saint-Luc QC) stops by with photos of her grandchildren and lets me know to stop the presses: she's won a game! And, she even got a blank! Fran's got a gorgeous set of twin grandchildren and the girl looks just like Fran with arresting blue eyes!
