Round 16

Glenn Mosher, a Toronto club member, is here this round, helping out, too. Mad pressed him into immediate service, getting him to help her enter the annotated games into the laptop.

Shaun Goatcher (Mississauga ON) vs. Mark Edelson (Toronto ON): ANTIRAPE, OVERLAID, and ASUnDER for Shaun. GIBLETs and LEUCINS for Mark. Shaun's win, 487-411. But Mark was in the game and even his last rack was RESTAGE. Nothing like being in it until the end!

Sue Tremblay (Carlsbad Springs ON) vs. Dielle Saldanha (Richmond BC): HaULMING, ENDBRAIN, and TUYER.

Jeremy Hildebrand (Ottawa ON) vs. Jill Turney (North Vancouver BC): DRAGSTaR to the R and BRANTAIL.

Jason Krueger (Calgary AB) vs. John Dungey (Mitchell ON): HEADLINER and UnVARIEd.

Lynda Wise (Toronto ON) vs. Salvatore Desiato (Toronto ON): GYMNASIA, COuNTERs, and ROTATION.

It was a close one, but it was a 430-423 win for Sary Karanofsky (Cote Saint-Luc QC) vs. Michael Lancashire (Toronto ON). I see her SENARII, BANDERS, and SAMPLED. He got down ArRIVED and CoTTERS.

Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) is playing Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) this round. At his table are Deb Pyper and Fern Lindzon on annotation and he only has eyes for his tiles! I find out later that it was Robin's win and she got a bingo-bango-bongo getting there. She played RETRIES for 70, FLOUNCE for 72, and TOREUTIC for 61. Later on MILAGES spilled out of rack and onto the triple lane for 88. Dean managed BEGONIAS for 65. At one point, in a way that only cruel tile gods can make it work out, he opened the board with MOT and Robin was given a gift, a spot for QOPH/MOTH for a ton of points. 475-417 for the highest-rated woman in Canada.

Brian Williams (Winnipeg MB) is sitting quietly at his board, his annotators, Lisa Kessler and Gregg Foster, off to the side working on their paperwork. I sit down in his opponent's chair and ask how it went. Not so hot, I'm sensing. After drawing 7 consonants and trading in 5, he played CALUTRON through the U, but then that was about it. Joel Wapnick (Montreal QC) was able to get down ASTRIDe and sNORERS.

Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) lost to David Boys (Dorval QC) this round, but it was a good game. The phalanx of annotators has grown to even more at that table now! After it was done and they players were laughing and chatting in hushed tones (ever head Adam shout?), I asked Dave what his blank count was. He said, "Well, 30-10, now. Adam was actually way above the average of most of my opponents; he got 1!" More giggling.

We go into break with some tense people. What will the next two games bring? Who will be our two finalists?
