Round 17

Our dear John Chew was featured in an article from the 6 April 2008 Toronto Sun. It was a piece on the Celebrity SCRABBLE event that is taking place tomorrow evening. A copy of it has been hastily posted to the standings tripods, but none of us has stopped long enough to look at it. In it, John and three others are playing SCRABBLE, well kind of, with one person reading the OSPD, and it has the look of a staged photo. Very funny.

One of the first games to finish this round is between Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) and Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON). Their annotators are barely caught up with them, they played pretty quickly. I see Adam's ERASION for 70, INSANITY for 62, CRINOIDs for 76, JADE for 36, then QUAILED for 89. So, that translates to a bingo-bango-bongo, a high-scoring triple play, and then another bingo. No slouch, Chris got down AREOLAS for 67 and TRIPLES for 73.

Andrew Golding (Verdun QC) vs. Tony Leah (Ajax ON): PETeRING, MONADIC, INTRUDES, and REGISTEr.

David Boys (Dorval QC) is in a hard-fought board 1 battle with Max Panitch (Toronto ON). I had to hear from a bird that Max is a new dad with a 2-week-old son at home. Not bad for a sleep-deprived dad to make it to table 1 toward the end of the CNSC. I remember when Max used to slum and play in my division! On Dave's last rack, I see WHEN LUV, which gets me thinking.... Dave ends up winning, 394-368.

I see Grant Rowland (Mississauga ON) hit the side of hte table. His rack holds SATIRE and what does he pick? An O! No bingos there!

Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) vs. Lloyd Mills (Georgetown ON). Her big win, 451-376. I see her OROGENiC, STOPpERS, and PREANAL.

So, since David Boys (Dorval QC) won his game, he is in the finals and it is now down to Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) and Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) to duke it out at table 1 for the chance to play Dave. In a joking manner, Robin commiserated with Dave because he won't make his train ride back home now. He has to stay for the Finals. Somehow, I think he doesn't really mind.

Fern Lindzon has taken a break from her annotating duties to sell and autograph a few of her CDs. Making money, making contacts, and making SCRABBLE. What a day!

Last game coming up. John Chew snapping the whip, trying to get people into their chairs so that folks can make their planes, trains, and automobile trips home.

What a fabulous, fabulous time!
