Round 18

We know this round that David Boys (Dorval QC) has made the finals of this year's CNSC. Now we are about finding who will be in the finals with him. At table 1, Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) is playing Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) for the privilege of dueling with Dave tomorrow.

People are crowding into the playing room and are being herded upstairs to peer down on the playing room. Since I'm on the playing floor itself, I am able to wander by the Logan vs. Daniel game and it isn't looking pretty for Robin, at all. 335-165. I walk by them several times as they game winds down and catch them in the endgame chat. I hear Robin mention that this is her second game against Adam at the CNSC and both times he opened with blank bingos and then went on to get a second bingo, effectively shutting her out of both games. Adam wins this game and thus the chance to face Dave tomorrow in the best of 5 finals. The room is full of happiness for them both.

Gene Tyzska stopped by the playing room today during this round. He'd read the coverage and came to check on the malfunctioning clock. He's got an idea to install a new "item" into his next generation of clocks so that they freeze in the position they were last in before they go whacky, so that it is easier to replace a clock with the "right" time displayed. As it is now, when a clock loses battery power, it tends to reset or do something else that falls under the realm of "crazy." It will be nice to see this implemented!

I catch Lou Cornelis (Ottawa ON) and Dielle Saldanha (Richmond BC) at the challenge machine. ARRANT is acceptable.

I walk by Glenn Dunlop (Brantford ON) vs. Tony Leah (Ajax ON) and see Tony put down SPELEAN for 76. Looking over his scoresheet, I see that he played ORATION for 63, too. I can't quite piece who did what, but at some point DEADEN went down and was extended to DEADENING.

Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) vs. Max Panitch (Toronto ON): RESPEAKING is on their board. I find out later that it was first PEAKING, then SPEAKING, and then RESPEAKING.

Jason Broersma (Milton ON) had a rough start to the event, but ends up 9-9 and he's happy.

George MacAulay (Saskatoon SK) vs. Chris Williams (Vancouver BC): The place of ITALIC was extended to ITALICISE to the triple for 33. George played BELCHiNG, FUSIONS, and ENAMELER, which drew a challenge. Chris played WONDERED, ASTERNAL, and DOwNPLAY. George's win, 479-375.

Many players, sensing they weren't going to make the finals, say goodbye to us as we try to input scores to get the awards ceremony going.

Let us go do that!
