Round 12

Breakfast was served in the upstairs mezzanine again this morning. Players and volunteers ate, drank, and by all appearances, were quite merry. Since this is the last day of games for all but the two finalists, a few overnight bags were wheeled into the room and now line the walls.

Usual before game problems like "who packed up a Habro board last night and could you please put it back out" and "who left this pile of Protiles on my board with no tile bag" were dispatched. Clocks were found for the clockless and broken clocks were replaced. Mad Palazzo is about ready to go into the battery business. She has replaced more batteries this event than ever before.

It has been an interesting week to be Fern Lindzon! The Toronto SCRABBLE club member and former CNSC player is here today to volunteer (I hear we may need a 13th annotator!). Amidst raising two children and playing a wicked game of SCRABBLE, she is a jazz musician and she recently put out a CD entitled Moments Like These. She received a great CD review this week from Wholenote and a glowing article entitled "Inspired by Ella" appeared in this past Wednesday's The Globe and Mail. Summed up, they love the CD! Find out more about her and this CD at www.ferndlindzon.com.

Fern has taken over annotating board 2 with Gregg Foster this round. Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON) is playing Brian Williams (Winnipeg MB).

On a Tony Leah (Ajax ON) vs. Dielle Saldanha (Richmond BC) board, I see INTEGRAL and ARGENTiC. At the same table between her brother, Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC), and Jeff Parsons (Logy Bay NL), I see NUCLeONS and rare two-Z word: WIzZES!

Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) and Glenn Dunlop (Brantford ON) are returning to their board. Robin tried AGELING* and off it came.

Joel Wapnick (Montreal QC) vs. Marilyn Murray (Richmond BC): FITFULLY, ACARINE, and OUTLEARN.

Andrew Golding (Verdun QC) vs. Mark Edelson (Toronto ON): KOUROI. Many other nice plays but that word caught my eye as a nice rack cleaner/board opener all at once!

Shaun Goatcher (Mississauga ON) vs. John Stardom (Ottawa ON): SONATINA and AUDITEEs. John won that game 437-331.

Mark Schellenberg (Calgary AB) vs. Ron Hoekstra (Kentwood, MI): PEACHING, tOXINES, and PEATIEr.

Craig Rowland (Mississauga ON) vs. Sue Tremblay (Carlsbad Springs ON): AsSIGNED, SMARTIE, and what looks to be scLAFFER. What kind of word is that? "One that sclaffs."

Lloyd Mills (Georgetown ON) vs. Jeremy Hildebrand (Ottawa ON): sPANGELED, UNTOwARD, and SENORITA.

Both of board 1 annotators came up to me in stunned disbelief about a game that just went down. In the Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) vs. David Boys (Dorval QC) endgame, with one in the bag, Adam had about a 35 point lead. Dave has AINNVV?, and Adam's previous bingo GENTRIES left the front hook in the triple lane. Dave has a win playing VIVA and even if he draws the Q, there's places to play it with the blank. He plays VIVE into an E elsewhere, giving Adam QI for 22, and even with this miss, Dave still has a win playing ANNAl / AGENTRIES... but he still doesn't see the hook, playing NANNAs from an N, which gets challenged off -- it's SOWPODS-only. Just... wow. It is stuff like this that keeps the game so interesting: even the best have blocks! Jill Turney (North Vancouver BC) is armed to analyze. Her game over this round, she relaxes back into her chair with PDA using LampWords on her front lap and Mike Baron's Wordbook leaning against her torso.
