Round 15

More and more visitors are coming to check out the event's progress. Graham Palmateer from the Toronto club is hanging out chatting it up and checking out the standings. And Merran Dunlop is here, visiting her husband, Glenn Dunlop (Brantford ON). Ever the funny raconteur, John Robertson (Cambridge ON) greeted her warmly and said, "So, you been sprinkling steriods on Glenn's cereal?" Glenn is doing very well at this year's CNSC!

John Chew made a few comments before the games started this afternoon and handed out official slips of white paper for folks to fill out their nominee for the Michael Wise Memorial Sportmanship Award. This award, completely decided upon by the players who fill out anonymous ballots, can go to a player who has not received it before. So the likes of Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC), Joel Wapnick (Montreal QC), Siri Tillekeratne (Calgary AB) cannot be nominated since they already have been given the honor (also the not present Bernard Gotlieb and Libero Paolella--and we can't vote for them anyways as they aren't here!). Player secret ballots are being stored in a Mike Wise Memorial Tournament tile bag so this is all a wonderfully orchestrated prize!

Sary Karanofsky (Cote Saint-Luc QC) had a barn burner of a game this round, playing four bingos: oUTHOUSE, PRICKERS, COSIEST, and DRAININg. Her opponent, Lam Tang (Vancouver BC), had only one, ALTITUDE, but he also had EX for 52 and QI for 64, which made the game closer than one would expect: 462-411, Sary's win.

Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) is shaking her head. "When the pressure builds up, when the games are really important, I just can't win." She lost to Evan Berofsky (Thornhill ON) this round, 331-528. Evan kept shaking his head, playing five bingos in eight turns. His bingos: READIED for 72, SCIURID for 83, STORABLE for 70, EASTINGS for 67, and ANAERObE for 66. This is the second game in a row where Robin claims to not have played a bingo. After slapping down two of three each game, this is not fun. High point? Had an M been open, she could have played MYCELIUM. Nice find, Robin!

David Boys (Dorval QC) just kicked the snot out of Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON), 482-327. Despite this, it was impossible to tell who won by their faces or demeanor! I ask Dave how it is going and he tells me that he is not good at all, rather he is lucky. He's had 21 to his opponents' 9 blanks. Soooooo, that is how he does it?

I missed the boat. Which boat, right? I miss a few. But I thought Adam Logan (Waterloo ON) had won at board 1. Lo and behold, he did not win. It was a win for Tony Leah (Ajax ON), 395-353. The reason I thought Tony lost? Well, he tried OROTETIC* and COOPTERS* consecutively and had them challenged off. And, he managed to get away with VALGOUS* for 80, which is only acceptable in SOWPODS. His good bingos were TRITIUM for 62 and ASSORTED for 80. Despite Tony playing 3 phonies, he won. Go figure. Tee hee!

The room is full of excitment. John Chew and Mad Palazzo have barely sat all day long, running to and fro, getting things ready. The annotators have all been given a goody bag and our thanks.
