Round 31

Alexander Rivard (Austin, TX) played Kevin Rosenthal (Solon, OH) this round and he nearly doubled Kevin's score, 531-278. Some of Alex's better plays: ATELIER for 66, LATRINE for 72, STEROID for 67, and MORtAGE* for 82.

Jason Randolph (San Antonio, TX) defeated Mike Lean (Washington, DC) this round, 447-430. Jason played MENTION, RELIABLE, and SNEAPED. Mike got down GITANOS and CRETINS.

A beaming Joyce Stock (Rocky River, OH) just lost this last round game to Randy Forrester (Santa Fe, NM), 335-397. This means that Randy wins 1st place in their division! Joyce says, "We played four times. He won two and I won two. He just won the one that counted!"

Ross Brown (Ottawa ON) faced Tony Leah (Ajax ON) this round. Ross played RADIANTS for 80, AEROLITH for 86, and QUEASIER for 86. Tony played EYEPOINt for 72, AUNTLIER for 77, and TINKERED for 65. Ross admits to trying MUEZIN*. It was Ross' win, 489-450.

Kenji Matsumoto (Aiea, HI) defeated Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) this round, 405-321. Of the three times they've played at this event, Kenji has won them all. You might say he has Jesse' number! The players milled around the Day-Matsumoto board, wondering who would get what place in the event. Nigel Richards (Malaysia) was one that wandered over, having just defeated Jim Kramer (Roseville, MN) at table 1, 576-339. Pausing their recount, both Kenji and Jesse shook the champion's hand.

Fun with statistics: Geoff Thevenot (Austin, TX) and Rafi Stern (Seattle, WA) went into this round with identical 16-14 +487 records. You guessed it: they TIED their last game, 452-452! Words played in thier game: PEPERONI, METHADOnE played from the ME, NUCLEONS, and CUSPIDAL.

Carl Johnson (Beaverton, OR) tells me that he played mARLSTONE through the separated O and E in his game with Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL) this round. That word anagrams to MESTANOL, Carl offers helpfully. It was Carl's win, 503-402.

Well, we've got our winners and in about an hour we'll have a prize ceremony!
