Round 16

Robert Felman (Nokomis, FL) reminds me that he and Brian Galebach (Columbia, MD) will be performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto this evening in the foyer at 7:30, so there is enough time to do dinner, the concerto, and then make the Town Hall meeting at 8:30!

Joey Mallick (Cape Elizabeth, ME) was charmed playing Yukiko Loritz (Anaheim, CA) this round. In response to his opening play, she used the letters YUK, though an e YEUK. Sounds like.... you!

Mary Rhoades' assistant, Elijah, went to dinner last night at a local restaurant, Hooters. While there, he told a couple of staffmembers that he was working at this event. They said they loved SCRABBLE and offered to play him. The waitresses won. I said, "Elijah! How did this happen!?" And he said, "well.... they were helped by two players from the NSC." Sure enough, Mark Fidler (Waltham, MA) and Scott Leifer (Mansfield, MA), also eating dinner there, helped them defeat Elijah! Talk about spreading SCRABBLE cheer near and far!

Mike Lean (Washington, DC) is having one superb tournament so far. He is 15-1 +1850. In his round 16 game he squared off with Roy Dixon (Dade City, FL), who was playing very well. After Mike played HOLIEST, Roy played FEEDINGS*. It was one of those plays that if it stayed on the board, Mike would surely lose the game. So he had to challenge, with full expectation that the word would be good. Surprise of surprises when it came off the board! He considers himself quite lucky to have won the game.

Hannah Lieberman (Charlotte, NC) has been at loose ends much of this round. She was slated to play her opponent two games in a row and they bombed through both games (she won them both) and now they have extra time. She has been singing some of the songs from Little Shop of Horrors, quietly.

Our camera-ready favorite Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) was featured in a Toronto newspaper just prior to coming to the NSC. There is a great photo of Robin lying on her hardwood floors with three round SCRABBLE boards around her head. Do check out the fun piece! http://www.torontosun.com/2011/08/07/word-power
