Round 21

Morris Greenberg (Brookline, MA) is a happy camper. He went 5-2 today and is now 13-8. In his round 21 game against Margaret Bee (Houston, TX), he played three bingos: AEDILES, REGAINED, and STYRENES. It was a 459-448 win. A great game for them both!

Matt Canik (Austin, TX) and Daniel Citron (Chicago, IL) had squared their tiles. Matt was leaning back in his chair, his head back, his hands running through his hair. That universal "argh" pose. I asked if Daniel had gotten him. He said, "Daniel get me? He didnt just get me, he threw me down on the ground and he stomped on me." Daniel laughed and denied it all. Daniel started with REVILER for 78. Matt replied with his five-vowel rack and played AUROREAN for 59. Daniel's next three plays were FEIGN for 54, INEDITA for 82, and TOREAdOR for 61. A bit later on, he punctuated his lead by playing LOBATED which hooked to make XENIAL for 92. Matt managed, from the rack of EGGEST?, to find STAGGiES through the A for 65.

Marshall Resnick (West Orange, NJ) took a few moments to study the standings lying on the command center table for division 3. He ends today 10-11 and he smiles contentedly.

Ted Barrett (JQXZ, NJ) played Susan Blanchard (Charlotte, NC) this round. He played a 9: ELECTORAL through the OR for 72 and GUSTIER. Susan got down MISHIREd. Ted's win, 465-356.

Suhas Rao (Apex, NC) vs. Worapol Ratanapitaksuk (Carol Stream, IL). Their game picked up, I glean a bit from Suhas. He played four bingos: TUITION, COURAGE, INSIDES, SNOOKEr. Golf had no bingos, but lost, 428-538.

Jack Overby (Rosemount, MN) ended today with a 5-2 record and he's riding high. His parents, Kathleen and Bob, have come along for the trip and both are excited about his great performance in this year's NSC, his third NASPA tournament! His round 21 opponent was Nawapadol Sayavesa (Thailand) and in this game Jack played PARTYER, OUTCURST*, DENTALS, and DOURINE. Jack was up by 155 when Nawapadol played EBONISH for 94. Still up by 116 with no tiles left in the bag, Nawapadol bingoed with DAYwORK and caught Jack with 16 points in tiles. Enough to change Jack's fortune in the game. Nawapadol's win, 484-472.

Chris Cree (Dallas, TX) and Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR) are sitting at their completed board. About 95% of the games are done at this point. The two of them keep looking down, Chris looks up, he sighs. I move in... and dare to ask how it went. Chris said, "I lost, 482-483, with no blanks and no Ss." Chris played a 149-point triple-triple, EMIGRANT.

Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) smiles at me and says, "The high point of this long day was playing SOOTHSAY. I lost that game along with many more, but I still liked the play!" It appears that Robin is suffering the same fate as Joe Edley (Port Jefferson, NY) this NSC: a paucity of blanks! She got two today!

A fantastic day, 10 more games to go!
