Round 20

Matt Canik (Austin, TX) vs. Richard Spence (Tucson, AZ) at table 1 in division 2. This game was lightening fast, with Matt ekeing out a 496-434 win over Richard. Matt felt guilty becasue he was so lucky. Since they both scored so well, perhaps it was just a well-fought battle, Matt played MARTINs, RAX for 54, QUADS for 55, and ANTIPOLE for 61. Richard played REALIST for 74, DEVOTION for 63, BEAVERS for 78, and JAWED for 48. Both are 16-4 and a bit ahead of the rest of the field.

Mike Lean (Washington, DC) vs. Worapol Ratanapitaksuk (Carol Stream, IL), table 1, division 3. RETINAE, ARABLES, DEFORMS, WHINERs, a 450-407 win for Golf. They had a scoring error that carried on for 3/4 of the game, a 1-point discrepency, that they ironed out after the game was over. By the tenor of the discussion between them, I doubt either will be in division 3 again next year!

Division 3's second table, Suhas Rao (Apex, NC) vs. Jason Randolph (San Antonio, TX). A high-scoring game all the way around, Suhas played INFLATER for 86, REPAyiNG for 140, RETINOL for 63, and QI/QI for 60ish. Jason played AMNIOTES for 90 and lost, 400-530. Suhas has taken over first place in their division. Of this last game, his score, his place in the event, he smiles wide and shakes his head in disbelief.

Michael Bassett (Port Clinton, OH) just had a monstrous win against Shirley Petrey (Houston, TX), 546-373. She had two bingos: OUTLAIn for 65 and OPENERS for 71. He dumped all seven tiles twice and each time he picked a bingo out of the bag! So, two gift bingos and one more: DENTALIA for 80, AIRLINES for 77, and SAINING for 75. But, perhaps, the worst part of this game for Shirley was the full rack she got stuck with: WMBSGJF for 50 points!! Let's just say ol' Michael is back into his stride!

Division 4's Alexander Rivard (Austin, TX) says a casual hello to me. I ask him how he's doing and he says, "we'll see." That is when his opponent, who was trailing behind him, came into view. Ron Barker (Boise, ID) challenged UNIC* and off it came! A moment later, the game was over, a 382-358 win for Alex. I see REPARTEE, SITTINg, and DILATEs.

Betsey Wood (Concord, MA) and Hans Oh (Mississauga ON) had a great game this round in division 3. She played ALOETIC and TONELESS and he got down RECHEATS, ENGINEER, and BOATING. A 445-394 win for Hans!

Risa Horowitz (Richmond Hill ON) defeated William Snoddy (Asheville, NC) this round, 401-332. They were enjoying an endgame discussion and moving tiles all over!

Samantha Nelson (Houston, TX) admits to an outrageous phoney today: OASISEs.
