Round 13

Dallas Johnson is quietly excited. A 212-point Z play just took place in his division, 2. In a Richard Spence (Tucson, AZ) vs. Matt Canik (Austin, TX) game, Matt played NEAREST, but the game's other two bingos were Richard's: LOITERS for 70 and the lovely Z play SPaETZLE through the first E. Richard tried NEVIOUS* (he confused it with NIVEOUS), but Matt called it off. A monster 520-372 win for Richard.

The Lexington SCRABBLE club has two club members playing at table 3 in division 1 this round: Bradley Whitmarsh (Attleboro, MA) vs. Rod MacNeil (Cambridge, MA). I kept my eye on it and it took forever to get some news because the game ended with 13 seconds on Rod's clock and 9 seconds on Brad's. Rod played FASTENED for 89 and Bradley got down SoUNDED for 69. Other fun words: PAGODS, EXODI, CHINE, and ECHARD. In the end, Bradley won, 331-311. I figured it was a mistake and asked them if this was right, it was. Bradley admits it was the lowest-scoring win he's ever had! There was much endgame chatter, tiles moving all over the place, as they tried to figure out how Rod could have eked out more points.

Nigel Peltier (Seattle, WA) vs. Scott Appel (Trenton, NJ): game in progress: BIOGS and CLOZE are on their board.

David Koenig (Silver Spring, MD) vs. Trey Wright (Sierra Madre, CA): The game is only half done and I see VENOGrAMS (anagrams to MANGROVE) and STrAWING (anagrams to RINGTAWS) on their board. BARYE and KAPH are on my weird word watch list. Thanks to John Luebkemann (Richmond, VA) for the anagrams.

The tall guys squared off at table 6 this round: Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) vs. Stefan Rau (Hudson, NY). I see BE?MING, PRoTEAN, and VINTNER. By the time the game ended, I was back at my desk and I saw Jesse walk by. He told me he'd won in the very end of the game because Stefan had to pick one bingo lane to block and he chose the wrong one. I then asked the big question: which one of them was taller. He paused and said, "You know, if you asked each of us, I think we'd both say we were taller than the other." So, give or take a smidge, they are both 6'4".

Paul Avrin (New York, NY) vs. Cynthia Seales (Stone Mountain, GA): HeADLESS, TAVERnAS, SOLARET, and FEEB are on their board.

Conrad Bassett-Bouchard (Piedmont, CA) finally broke his 7-game losing streak. Sadly, for Rob Robinsky (Spring Lake Park, MN), it happened in their game. Rob made an awesome play: tOLARJEV for 67 and TOLERANt on the triple, but Conrad got down DIAcIDS, ANTIDOTE, SLINGER, and LACTAMS.

Morris Greenberg (Brookline, MA) is delighted: he's 7-6 after being 2-6!

While I was still gathering information about round 13, Dan Stock found me to say that the Hoang brothers were already into their round 14 game against each other and I'd better hurry to get a photo because it would be over before I blinked!

The game long pulled up, Rafi Stern (Seattle, WA) told me a bit about his game with Kenji Matsumoto (Aiea, HI). Rafi played FORETOLD for 80 and KAISERIN for 84. Kenji played GRUmBLES for 89, SWOUNInG for 86, ADVOWSON for 96, and TELFERED for 63. Kenji's win, 541-386.
