Round 18

Scott Jackson (Minneapolis, MN) tells me about his last two games. A tale of woe he weaves. In round 17 he squared off against Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL) and it was over from about the beginning. Brian bingo/bango/bongoed: BONEsET, RETiNTS, and UNGOTTEN to the N. This was turns 2, 3, and 4. And then at the end of the game he triple-tripled through an N with GAINLESS for 140. Brian won, 590-328. Just as Scott was beginning to rebuild his dented self-esteem, he sat down opposite Ian Weinstein (Coral Springs, FL). I almost don't need to go on, do I? Oh, but let's. Ian put down five bingos: FORMANTS though the A, ENROBING through the first N, RETARDED to the D, aNLAGES, and OUTHEaRS from the O. The score, 574-289, Ian's win. So, Scott lost 551 spread points in two games. He is now 11-7 with a losing cume. He says, perhaps in the spirit of making lemonade, that he longs to have the worst spread of anyone with his record. A guy has to have goals.

A funny looking result slip comes in as I'm sitting beside and talking to Dan Stock. The woman who handed it in, Gerianne Abriano (Staten Island, NY) is still holding it. I look up and she apologizes, "I killed a mosquito with it. The bug landed and it was the only thing I had to squish it with!" So, there are bug guts on that slip! Who knew NSC workers had to wear hazmat suits!? The trip up to the table isn't too frequent for Gerianne this NSC, so we tried to focus on how nice it was to see her while we handled her slip with tongs.

A note on my computer: Bruce Shuman (Wilmington, NC) had a game this rouind against Broderick Larkins (New Orleans, LA) that came down to a final play challenge by Broderick of Bruce's NADIR, which is ironic, since NADIR means the lowest point in a person's fortunes.

Another note: Request for new rule — Please make it against the rules for the last game to begin in a round, to wind up as a tightly contested game, where the eventual losr has a 150 point lead, but ends up losing by 2, necessitating a recount and making the loser so overwrought that he needs a break before beginning his next round, other games of which are half over.

Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) defeated Joey Mallick (Cape Elizabeth, ME) this round, 465-393. Though it was only 60 points, Jason found OUTRAISES from the OUT. He also got down GROWLiNG for 90, VARIStOR for 62, and DRAB for 55.

On a game between Richard Spence (Tucson, AZ) and Alan Stern (Shadow Hills, CA): EUPNEAL, ENDORSE, COGITAtES, and ILLICIT.

John Dalton (Dallas, TX) vs. Kit Morehead (Berkley, MI): QUAkIEST, BLEATER, and TINGLER.

Nigel Richards (Malaysia) is 3-1 this morning. Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY) is 1-3.

Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) vs. Scott Appel (Trenton, NJ): LEXiCONS, LINTERS, BAILING, and GrEYLAGS.

Nigel Peltier (Seattle, WA) vs. Bradley Whitmarsh (Attleboro, MA): JANGlIER for 82, AcETONE for 61, and PARANOIA for 72 for Nigel. Of this last play, Bradley says, Nigel played ZIT, keeping AAAI, he picked PON and then played PARANOIA! Also, NIgel played HULLAGE* for a 40-point double-double. Bradley accepted it and tried to hook an S-bingo to the bottom and Nigel called it off. Bradley got down BAILOUTS, but lost.
