Round 26

Gary Skowronski (Silver Spring, MD) vs. Suhas Rao (Apex, NC). Four bingos: CHEERING for 69, NEGATES for 77, ZLOTIES for 135, and TENsILE for 65. A 526-326 win for the School SCRABBLE player.

One table over, Morris Greenberg (Brookline, MA) had a great game with Roy Dixon (Dade City, FL). I see Roy's PSALTER and OVERMAN. Morris extended this last word to OVERMANNINg, which drew a challenge. An 11-letter word: wow! Morris also played STUDDINg and DEPUTES and won, 469-354.

Table 1, division 4: Joyce Stock (Rocky River, OH) vs. David Postal (Signal Hill, CA). I see POLENtA, ROUTINES, UNDERAGE, and DENTILS. David made a nice, high-scoring play that almost caught him up when he created UNDERAGED with another play. I hear Joyce pointing this out to him. Her win, 449-395.

Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) vs. Kenji Matsumoto (Aiea, HI). SIDElING for 68, KERYGMA for 59, LOCALIST for 70, lIVELIER for 72, and PAPAINS for 73. Jesse tried UNSTRAP/SIDElINGS* and Kenji called it off. A 399-388 win for Kenji.

Orry Swift (Houston, TX) defeated Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL), 429-342 : ARCHIVED, sNOOTIER, and FORMuLATE through the OR.

Chris Cree (Dallas, TX) vs. Scott Appel (Trenton, NJ). YOHIMbE and SADIRoN, both Chris', but he was stuck with 7 consonants on his final rack and lost the game.

Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY) vs. Peter Armstrong (Milwaukee, WI) board: JACANA, DATABASE, ORgANDIE, FEATLIER. Of this game, Joel turned his lip up at the "nice" words since they were mostly played by Peter. Each played a bingo and Peter pulled JACANA out of the bag and Joel pulled something akin to ROIL.

Matt Canik (Austin, TX) was wowed in his game with Jerry Scheiten (Buffalo, NY). Matt said, "he played some crazy words." I love that the old guard can still teach something to these whippersnappers! Jerry played CLAIMED for 80, Matt replied with NARCEINE for 61, Jerry then played PELLETS for 81. A bit later, Jerry came down with FOLKIEST for 77, UNCTUoUS from the first U for 61, and UNSEARED for 68. Jerry's win, 519-383.

At the end of this round, Nigel Richards (Malaysia), who had played Jim Kramer (Roseville, MN), started to quiz me about which year each player had won his NSC championship and at which location. I realized how much it had all become a blur for me and Nigel started rattling off each winner, who each winner played in the finals, which venue, and he wasn't even at most of these championships!
