Round 28

Joyce Stock (Rocky River, OH) continues to lead in division 4. This round she played Rasul Macasimbar (los Angeles, CA) and won, 397-385.

Similarly, Suhas Rao (Apex, NC) continues to win and lead division 3. This round, he played Doug Lundquist (Chicago, IL). I see Doug's RENOVATE and UNITAGES. Suhas played HELIAST, DARTING, LOUSIER, and the fun OXTAILS that he later front hooked on the triple FINK/FOXTAILS for a bunch of points! Suhas' win, 563-448.

Lewis Saul (Tucson, AZ) enjoyed his game with Hans Oh (Mississauga ON) this round. He played LAMBLIKE for 100, which drew a challenge. Other bingos: VESIcATE, METTLES, and CeNTNER. A 505-315 win for Lewis, he admits he didn't notice CENTNER and though CENTER had been played. Hans had hoped it would draw a challenge. Lewis admits that it might have.

Michael Early (Fort Worth, TX) played ALIGNER for 73 and the gorgeous GJETOST for 107! His opponent, Yukiko Loritz (Anaheim, CA) played REcOINS and gRADUAL and won, 495-407.

Continuing to have an overwhelming event, Jack Overby (Rosemount, MN) defeated Nathan Benedict (Tucson, AZ) this round, 462-376. He explained that their endgame was tricky. With very few left in the bag, one of them potentially the Q, Jack just outright passed and didn't play so that he didn't get the Q. This tactic may have worked, but the Q was already on Nathan's rack. I'm not sure if it was a Q-stick or not. Jack mentioned the "gender imbalance" in division 1. He said he considered this a compliment to women who have more sense than to study word lists all day.

Joey Mallick (Cape Elizabeth, ME) has now won 9 games in a row: wow Joey. Similarly, Joe Edley (Port Jefferson, NY) won all his games today, so he's at 7 in a row, having defeated Trey Wright (Sierra Madre, CA) this round, 434-425. It was a great moment, when their game wrapped up. Joe and Trey were deep into an endgame analysis, many tiles on the sides of the board, Trey's hair raked between his fingers. The only kibbitzers were Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL) and Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR). It was a fun NSC winner consultation moment!

Brian Bowman (Villa Hills, KY) just took down Nigel Richards (Malaysia) again, 454-326. He's just stormed through his games today in such an impressive and quiet fashion. On their board, I see CANDIES, RAVAGED, ROUNDELS, NECTARY, ALIENEES, and EXpULSED.

Scott Pianowski (Berkley, MI) tells me that Bradley Robbins (Windham, NH) is a very nice young man, pleasant to play with, and he'll go on to be a great champion. Awwwww.... how nice!

One of the last games to wrap up this round was between Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) and Jim Kramer (Roseville, MN). I see Jesse's BROTHELS, GROUTER, WANToNED, and Jim's CENTARE, OLDWIVES, and BERAScAL. Other weird words: LITHIA and JEBEL. Jesse's win, 483-447. This win puts Jesse into first place in Division 1. He is one of four with 20-8 records. Second place, Nigel Richards (Malaysia), third, Kenji Matsumoto (Aiea, HI), and fourth, Brian Bowman (Villa Hills, KY). So exciting!

Kevin Leeds (Austin, TX) tells me that he had a good game with Jeremy Jeffers (Decatur, GA) this round. He opened with WORRITS for 78. Jeremy then had a nice run of bingos: ANTIAIRS, GLACIERS, and PATTERN. Then Jeremy played FEDEX. Kevin was able to V-stick Jeremy, but still lost the game, 409-415.

A note slipped on my desk from Dan Stock. "Nice try.... bottom board of division 4: MEZANINE* challenged off." So close!

Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) went 5-2 today after going 2-5 yesterday. Nice turnaround.

Off to Stefan's talk and then three more games to go tomorrow!
