Round 5

This round's CSW bye player, Pat Schuberg (Australia), is more than happy to play a nonrated game with visiting player, Alan Love. We are all feeling the love.

Announcements before the afternoon session included reminding folks about the trivia show tonight and the singing group. Alice Ching-Chew, or Ally, is all excited about the latter. She signs in her church choir and belongs to a Celtic singing group with her husband, Ted Chew, John Chew's "little" brother. I am going to be torn about which one to attend! I wonder if Chris Lipe (Rome, NY) brought his sax? And I bet Kevin Colosa is sad he didn't come now! We could have had some Celtic theremin jamming going on!

I'm not sure how happy the adults are here in Orlando, but one thing for certain is that the kids LOVE IT! The Chew kids: Jamie, Liam, Ian, and Amy came in beaming at the end of the lunch break. This place is one constant high between the fantastic pool and the parks.

Kate Fukawa-Connelly types in:

HANGDOg and ENTHR(ON)ED on Jon a board by Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA).

Pretty sixes: ICEBOX and MILORD, Zev Kaufman (Toronto ON) vs Thomas Reinke (Middleton, WI) Division 1.

Eric Tran (Calgary AB) vs Charles Reinke (Middleton, WI) Division 1. In the endgame, Eric bingoes with pRIDIEU to the U to go up, but Reinke had LUXATES to go out and catch Eric with ADSRY, Reinke wins, 414-381.

WiTHhELD to the D, 1A to maximize the bingo, Division 1, Ian Weinstein (Coral Springs, FL) vs. David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC).

CLaMMING — division 3, Jo Anne Cohen (Montgomery, NY) vs Frances Shaw (Fair Lawn, NJ).

Edward Gowash (APO, AE) tries HAUTIEST* to the T against Supriya Devnani (Orlando, FL), challenged off. Division 3.

David Whitley (Monrovia, CA) tries FAECALLY* in division 2, challenged off.

Roy Kamen (Covina, CA) played both NOIsIER and NoISIER against Linda Oliva (Lisbon, MD), division 2.

Brian Bowman (Villa Hills, KY) plays KREATINE# — a new KATE bingo for me! against Sam Kantimathi (Sacramento, CA) in CSW.

Nigel Peltier (Portland, OR) had a great game with Jason Li (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux QC) this round. Jason opened with CAJOlES for 96 (CAJOLES) and then Nigel responded with DIABOLOs for 90. I see Jason's SEICENTO (which Nigel thinks is the silliest S-hook word in the dictionary, that insight for all you experts, the rest of us are just nodding politely) and Nigel's MISPART. Nigel's win, 478-387.

"I had everything." This greeting as I look at Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR) as his game winds up with Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON). She throws her hands up: there was nothing I could do! I see Dave's GATHERED, PoRTING, NARROWLY, and Robin's DILUENTS. The Z or zed as she calls it, was in the top triple lane almost half the game and she never could put together a four-letter Z play to reach the triple. It was hard going there. And the thing is, there are few people who you want to have "everything" less than Dave. He is that good.

Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) gets stuck with a 1-point tile and a blank, giving Komol Panyasophonlert (Thailand) only two points as their game winds up. I see SARtORII, HEARING, and GUNITES on their board. Walking by, Win Inthara (Orlando, FL) tells me the blank was a T. And, he explains that poor Komol played off three tough consonants to pull WLLL out of the bag to go with the one L on rack already! He had all four Ls on his rack at one time, poor guy! Jason's win, 459-351.

New faces at board 1 this game: John Karris (San Jose, CA) vs. Carl Johnson (Beaverton, OR). I arrive just as John puts the nail in Carl's coffin, winning the game. Check it out in the annotated section!

This Collins stuff is expansive! I mean, there are just SO MANY WORDS! In an Emanuel Chicoine (Montreal QC) vs. Carl Johnson (Beaverton, OR) game, the word EUOI# was played first. I see ENORMITY, EMOTIoNS, READINg, and DEFACED on the board.

Sam Rosin (Bernardsville, NJ) beat up on Robert Linn (Potomac, MD) this round. I see TAENIAE, iNDRAFTS, UNHAIRED, DEXTRAL, ESPOUsE, EOLITH, MONAD, QUOIF#, and JOYING.

At table 1 in the CSW division, Matthew Bernardina (Durham, NC) defeated Winter Zxqkj (Houston, TX), 420-364. I see Matthew's fReNULAR from the f on the triple and ATTENDED. Winter played fRISKIER and GLOTTIS. Matthew is 5-0, sizzling hot!

Mary Rhoades thinks there is something in the flowers. She is 4-1 and happy as a clam.

Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) is 2-3 and just lost a game to friend and fellow Canadian, Lou Cornelis (Stoney Creek ON). Lou is now 3-2 and Matthew says he is happy for him.

From the "stuff that drives directors crazy" department: John Robertson, the division 1 leader tells me that at the end of round 4 a division 2 player put division 1 on the result slip and put that slip into the division 3 result slip basket. The trifecta of what not to do!

Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, Round 24, Round 25, Round 26, Round 27, Round 28, Round 29, Round 30, Round 31, After the Tournament.
