Round 10

Kate played spot the phoneys this round. Names withheld to protect the innocent:

D2: DOULIAs*, PTOOIE*, QUIPT*.

Walking around in division 2, I also saw OvERMILK and FLuRRED challenged at the same time on two different boards. One is good in both divisions, one is only good in the CSW division. Which is which?

The phonies are more(?) stylish in division 1: SALIX(#), UNGUA*, DIFORM* REBELING*, GODESS*

In other news, couple D2 boards are off to fast starts:

Carl Stocker (Miami, FL) vs Arun Methaset (Thailand), four turns in, STACKING, AREnOUS and AUREOLAS are already on the board (along with MORALE). Carl wins, 424 to 363.

David Whitley (Monrovia, CA) vs Kevin Leeds (Austin, TX), with five turns on the board, I see LOCALISE, OUTRIVAL and LIKENERS. Walking back around later, ACETOSE, OUtDOES and THuMPED have been added to the board. Most of those must've been Dave's since he won by 258 (591-333).

Walking by Shelley Ubeika (Mississauga ON), I peek at her rack and it says YOUYOUR.

Over to CSW, Winter Zxqkj (Houston, TX) vs Steve Polatnick (Miami, FL), WOOL?ATS is on the board. Only one word in OWL, but two possibilities in CSW. They're both silly.

In Division 1, I see BESTIARy through the A as a triple triple, Martin Weisskopf (Huntsville, AL) vs Win Inthara (Orlando, FL).

Lots of repeating consonant bingos on David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC) vs Charles Reinke (Middleton, WI): TRIENTEs, MEMETIC, SYSTEMS. Patterns are pleasing to me.

I walk by to see Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) with ??EKPST on her rack. She bingos with the cute SKipPETS.

I sit next to Chris Cree (Dallas, TX), waiting for another game to finish and ask how it went against Kenji Matsumoto (Berkeley, CA). he says "I got both blanks!" but looking at the score, I see that he also lost. His early post-bingo draw was BGHJRUV. Late, he gets BRaSIER down, with twelve in the bag, and manages to draw ?EIIIIP. Kenji Matsumoto (Berkeley, CA) wins by about 30.

Carl Johnson (Beaverton, OR) vs Lou Cornelis (Stoney Creek ON): Carl is behind by a bit midgame and bingos with gIROLLE, putting the blank in the triple lane. Lou plays ALONE horizontally, making Ag, LI, OR, NO and EL, effectively leaving only lanes for sevens or eights. But, Carl has drawn ?EGIRRS, and gets ScRAgGIER triple triple through Ag, and goes on for the win.

Michael Gincel (Lakewood, NJ) is at 1-9 and says he can go home now that he has a win. His opponent misplayed, meaning to play GURU and instead playing GRUU. He challenges it off, goes out, and wins by 14.

Back to Sherrie: Eliza Lieberman (Charlotte, NC), now 2-5, played a second 92-point word: REWAITS*.

A found piece of paper on my desk: "Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) had a last rack at table 1, which was IIIIIST."

Another note says, "The first-ever tournament game between David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC) and Nigel Richards (Malaysia) went to the American with a score of 496-386."

Robert Gillis (Owens X Roads, AL) had a twelve-letter word on his board. It started with Bob's bingo of PRISONED, and then, admitting he fished for three turns, Bob finally got and played EIMR, and played REIMPRISONED. He lost the game to Lawren Freebody (Hawthorne, CA), though — she played PARVENUS, SKATING, and OUTLINED. He played, CHEVIOTS.

David Koenig (Silver Spring, MD) vs John OLaughlin (Cambridge, MA), a big win for David, 551-352. David found BODGeRS# (John says, "BUDGeROS# played through an O elsewhere, and would've been more points), and then later in the game had a bingo bango bongo of JOGGLERS, RIVERAIN#, and RUfIYAA. John got REANOINT. Both are 5-5 now.

John Van Pelt (Centreville, VA) vs Pat Schuberg (Australia) — the word that catches my attention is HWAN, which is in the OWL, so I don't know why... two fun plays: ETAErIOS# and WEBBINGS. I later hear that John won by 240 — ouch! He is 5-5 +9 now.

SILVeRNs* is typed into the challenge computer. I run back with the players and see Orlet Bullock (Miami, FL) tried it and Geoff Thevenot (Austin, TX) called it off. Geoff tried to block that bingo lane, and Orlet then got down SILVeRINg. Other words on their board: ANTIGENS and TOOTHIER.

GIRONISE* is on the CSW laptop as unacceptable — not sure who played it.

Andrew Golding (Verdun QC) vs Matthew Bernardina (Durham, NC) at table 1 in the Collins division: a very close game. Andrews played SALIENCE and ATHEISE#. Matthew played ENTRAIN. A 397-371 win for Andrew.

Wendell Haynes (Loxahatchee, FL) is 5-5 and enjoying the CSW division. His favorite play today is SODAINE#.

A beautiful board: Sam Kantimathi (Sacramento, CA) vs Bob Lipton (Vero Beach, FL) — it's tense, so I don't know who played what, but I see DRONIEST#, PIMENTOS, GHAZEL#, JAROOL#, and InqUIRED. Also, ARSED# (by the way, EARDS# is also good).

Chris Lipe (Rome, NY) vs Sam Rosin (Bernardsville, NJ) — what a gorgeous board! SEINING, ROBANDS (and NOYADE) by Sam, REDLINES and MERCAPTO (for 101) (and also TEGUA) for Chris. Also, Sam hooked LAPJES# to make PROBANDS!

Orry Swift (Houston, TX) had a 60-point game with Nawapadol Sayavesa (Thailand) this round. That's the highest in division 1 so far.

Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, Round 24, Round 25, Round 26, Round 27, Round 28, Round 29, Round 30, Round 31, After the Tournament.
