Round 17

Adam Logan (United Kingdom) pulled out the win vs. Evan Berofsky (Thornhill ON) at table 1 on the stage, 450-431. Kristen Chew tells me it was a great game as I walk up and Evan jokes, "I'd like to give the half the credit to my opponent." It is great to see so much good camaraderie. The game was always close. Adam got down the 118-point, double-double JOINABLE through the L for 118 and Evan shot right back with LEPIDOTE from the L on the triple lane. Adam also played UNNERVe for 65 and Evan got down STRIPED for 85.

In order to be Gibsonized this round, Adam Logan (United Kingdom) needed to win and not have both of the favorites at boards 2 and 3 to win by large margins. As it turned out, Adam won and both of the favorites lost, Tony Leah (Ajax ON) to Ron Hoekstra (Kentwood, MI) and David Boys (Dorval QC) to Shaun Goatcher (Mississauga ON) (more on these games further down). Because our numbers are now odd (because Carl Madden (Brantford ON) was forced to drop out due to a family emergency), Adam gets a bye for the last round.

In a rematch from last round, Craig Rowland (Mississauga ON) played David Stokoe (Windsor ON) again. It was David's turn to win, 428-350. I see vENEERS and AGENSIA on their board.

At the next board, I see that Maxim Panitch (Toronto ON) defeated Timothy Anglin (Scarborough ON), 376-346.

Shaun Goatcher (Mississauga ON) defeated David Boys (Dorval QC), 426-347 this round. I see four bingos: David's LEMONADE for 72 and SoMEWHAT from the S for 82 and Shaun's UNASKED/BLOBS for 83 and FARMING for 79.

At the next board, Tony Leah (Ajax ON) defeated Ron Hoekstra (Kentwood, MI), 401-376. After the game was over, Ron shook Tony's hand and wished him a sincere good luck with his next game. I see two bingos: Ron's RETRIEVE for 83 and Tony's ANISOLE for 69. I see that Ron tried a phoney: NODALIZE* which came off early in the game.

Lou Cornelis (Ottawa ON) defeated John Dungey (Mitchell ON), 393-337. I see DETAILED, played by John, and Lou's PETTLEd and TRACHeID.

Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) wins against Emanuel Chicoine (Montreal QC), 363-354. Dean tells me in passing that they both missed Emanuel's potential play of CHARTERS on the second play (which leads me to believe a phoney was played and removed but I can't verify this). Dean got down ROSEATE for 64 and MARTIANS for 72.
