On May 17, 2013, Mattel announced that the World SCRABBLE Championship would be renamed the Scrabble Champions Tournament, and take place as part of the 2013 Prague Mind Sports Festival, organized by Mind Sports International (MSI) at the ander's Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic, from December 3–8, 2013.

Nigel Richards of New Zealand became the first player to successfully defend the title, and to win it for a third time, defeating runner-up Komol Panyasophonlert in a repeat of their 2013 National SCRABBLE Championship duel earlier in the year.
