CNSC 2008 Information for Players

This page will be updated frequently from now until the beginning of the event. Please be sure to check it before you set out for the championship.

Arriving Late

You must arrive on Friday between 7:00 and 7:30 P.M. in order to register for the event. If you are not present at 7:30 P.M., your place may be given to an alternate player. If you are delayed en route on Friday, call John at (416) 876-7675.

The Playing Venue

This year’s Championship will be held in the Austin Gallery on the 12th floor of “The Suites at 1 King West”, a former bank head office converted into a hotel, whose name includes its address. Please check the directions to make sure you know how to get to the event.

No smoking will be permitted on the 12th floor.

Equipment

I had ordered special event Protiles, and they have already arrived, so we need not fear a repeat of 2003.

We will provide and ask you to use: official playing boards. We will have available for you to use if you do not prefer your own: racks and scoresheets. We ask that you bring your own: tile bags and game timers.

Meals

Because of the added expense of the Early Bird and the tightness of the schedule on Friday evening, there will be no opening reception. We will be providing a light breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack on Saturday and Sunday, and breakfast and lunch for finalists on Monday. Players with special dietary needs should contact John as soon as possible.

There is a huge range of restaurants within walking distance of the venue.

T-Shirts

I apologize that because of tight production deadlines, the T-shirt sizing information was not communicated to the printer in time, and as a result the event T-shirt is only available in an adult size Large.

Registration

Registration is from 7:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. on Friday evening. As mentioned above, you must arrive during that time or call John at 416-876-7675 if you do not wish to be replaced by an alternate player. At registration time, you will be asked to sign a copy of the tournament rules, confirm that your NSA membership is current (and renew if not), and pick up and count your new Protiles.

Early Bird

Main event players are eligible to play in the Early Bird on Friday, and 25 places are reserved for them. As there is unexpectedly large demand for those places, if you are sure you do not want to play in the Early Bird, please tell John.

Event Coverage

Event coverage will be similar to that of past years, and be provided by Sherrie Saint John, John Chew and a group of game annotators. Please encourage your club members, friends and family to follow your progress over the weekend. If any would like to help annotate, they should contact John preferably before the event begins.

Please check to make sure that your biographical information, as shown for instance in the detailed roster is complete and correct, and e-mail me any addenda or errata.

Guests, Visitors, Friends, Family...

As at past events, guests and visitors are welcome to view the playing room and games in progress, after identifying themselves to tournament staff, and as long as they do not interfere in any way with the players. As mentioned above, please also encourage anyone interested to follow your progress throughout the championship at this web site. If your family needs to contact you in an emergency, they may do so by calling John Chew at (416) 876-7675.
