Player Profile: Liz Ashby (Long Island, NY)

Born and raised in Australia, 31-year-old Liz Ashby says, "I've been keen on since age 13. I remember playing games with a neighbor who had one dictionary and I had another and we would argue over whether plays were acceptable or not." Years later, during a stint as a nanny in England, isolation drove Liz to briefly attend her first club. After moving to the United States, Liz worked her way to the East Coast and ultimately to Club #108, the Lexington, Massachusetts, club directed by Judy Horn. After attending only two club sessions, Liz bravely played in her first National Association sanctioned tournament in October 1999.
Recently relocated to Long Island, NY, Liz says she misses her old club. "The players in Lexington [Massachusetts] helped me build my competitive edge. It was wonderful to play with such a variety of serious players."
In addition to raising her son, Hudson, Liz works part-time as an Internet entrepreneur. She's improving her game by playing her partner Rich Baker and every so often ekeing out a win. Rated 1905, Rich is a Division 1 player at this NSC and a former World Championship alternate.
Back in Australia, during a summer family reunion at Lindemann Island's Club Med, Liz's poolside travel set caught the eye of staffmembers who asked her to put on a program. This impromptu tutorial has led to a full-fledged tournament that she and Rich Baker will host at Club Med Huatulco in Mexico next February. The duo ran a successful Italian tour/tournament in Italy last spring and will run another in Westchester county over the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend.
Liz recounts two high points in her brief tournament experience. In Atlantic City, she won a prize for having the high game in her division with a score of 576. And at a recent Milford, Connecticut, tournament, 16th seeded Liz finished in 4th place, which pushed her rating from 952 to its current 1105. Liz said, "That win was a real plus for my motivation and it encouraged me to do some studying to do better at my first NSC." To prepare for Providence, Liz has been studying the top 1,000 seven- and eight-letter words and hooks for the three-letter words. She's excited to see if her studying has paid off and if she has the stamina to play 31 games without burning out!
