About the Event

102 players from 45 countries will compete in the 7th World SCRABBLE® Championship on October 19-24, 2003 at the Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All players will play a 24-round modified Swiss preliminary, following which the top two players will compete in a best-of-five final to determine the new World Champion. The SOWPODS lexicon will be in effect, with a five-point penalty (but no loss of turn) for each acceptable word challenged.

The WSC has been held in odd-numbered years since 1991, with sponsorship alternating between Mattel and the National SCRABBLE® Association/Hasbro. This year's event is being organized by SCRABBLE® Masters Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian SCRABBLE® Association (MSA) with Mattel Inc. as lead sponsor. No plans have been announced yet for the 2005 World SCRABBLE® Championship.

American and Canadian players are invited based on a qualification system run by the NSA (see below). Players representing other countries should contact their national player organizations or SCRABBLE® distributor.
