What?

Hasbro Canada sponsored the first Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championship in the fall of 1996. The top two finalists in an eighteen-round tournament played a best-of-five series to determine the champion. A total of CAD 10,150.00 was awarded in prizes, distributed as follows: 5000, 2500, 1000, 500, 350, 250, 100, 100, 100 and 100 respectively to the top ten players, and 25 each for high word and high game on each of the first three days of play.

Who?

The entry criteria were:
Players must be Canadian citizens or have resided full-time in Canada since 1991. They must also be members in good standing of the National Scrabble Association, and have achieved an NSA rating of at least 1700 since 1993. Registration is limited to the first forty applications received; but if (as is likely) fewer than forty players register by the deadline, then registration will be opened to lower-rated players who meet the other criteria, with the highest-rated among them being accepted.
The following forty players registered, and in the event that one of them could not play, Lisa Deift was to be the first alternate:
Tim Anglin, Ian Bell, Len Borer, David Boys, James Cherry, John Chew, Hugh Currie, Glenn Dunlop, Linda Espallardo, Bob Fancett, Ray Francis, Max Garfinkle, Shaun Goatcher, Andrew Golding, Linda Gomes, Bernard Gotlieb, Albert Hahn, Sary Karanofsky, Leah Katz, Zev Kaufman, Mike Krepakevich, Jan Lanz, Adam Logan, Dave Lytle, George Macaulay, Ron Manson, Ross McKenzie, Peter Morris, Jim Nanavati, Libero Paolella, Jeff Parsons, Joe Peters, Robin Pollock, Craig Rowland, Mike Ryan, Fran Silver, Peter Teitelbaum, Siri Tillekeratne, Joel Wapnick, Lynda Wise.
