The nomination process for the 2017 CC Election began on September 1 and ended at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on October 15. All Canadian-based NASPA members in good standing were eligible to nominate themselves or other Canadian-based NASPA members for election. The actual election period, had it been needed, would have run from November 1 to November 30.

It is the intention of the Canadian Committee to award the three remaining berths based on a qualifying tournament (QT). However, if the QT is cancelled for any reason, the berths that would have been awarded based on the cancelled QT will be awarded based on PR.
+
The three-year terms of both Andy Saunders and Siri Tillekeratne are expiring on December 31, 2017Each was eligible to run for re-election. The following two people registered to be candidates:

The QT will be held after the 48 PR berths have been awarded.

The site, date, and format of the QT will be announced in due time.

The QT may be held in conjunction with another Scrabble event.

The QT will be restricted to players who have not already qualified for the CNSC.

Only players who are eligible to play in the CNSC and who intend to play in the CNSC will be allowed to compete in the QT.

All QT participants must meet the same minimum participation requirements as those who qualified based on peak rating.

There is no minimum PR requirement to play in the QT, but interested players must notify the director in advance to confirm their intention to play in the QT.

The director of the QT has the right to limit the number of entrants based on the size of the venue. The director of the QT will determine and announce which criteria (PR or first-come-first-served) will be used to enforce this limit.

The top three finishers at the QT will receive CNSC berths.

Any ties in the QTs will be broken by PR.

The three players who qualify from this tournament must be prepared to pay their $75 CNSC entry fees immediately.

Current qualification standings will be posted soon and updated regularly until the close of the qualification period.

== Alternates ==

Alternates will be based on the PR standings(i.e. The player with the best PR who did not qualify automatically will be at the top of the list of alternates.)

== Standbys ==

If any of the 52 players withdraw from the event on very short notice, or if there is a no-show on the day the CNSC begins, a standby will be used to fill the vacancy only in a case where it is impractical to notify an alternate. Hopeful players are therefore welcome to be present at starting time to act as standbys.

Standby players will be selected in order of PR standings with ties broken by their current NASPA ratings. Any further ties will be broken by a lottery.

All standbys must meet the event's Canadian citizenship or residency requirement and be NASPA members in good standing.

== Disputes ==

Any dispute regarding the application or interpretation of any of the above rules and guidelines will be resolved by the Canadian Committee, whose decision will be final.

The terms of both Tony Leah and Randall Thomas expire on December 31, 2012.  Neither chose to run for re-election.

Four candidates accepted nominations to run in the 2012 CC election to replace Tony and Randall.  Here are the results:

* Mad Palazzo: 58 votes

* Andy Saunders: 40 votes

* Sary Karanofsky: 33 votes

* Juraj Pivovarov: 19 votes

Note:  As the top vote-getter, Mad is elected.  Mad's election gives Ontario its maximum three representatives on the CC.  Thus, Andy Saunders, another Ontarian, cannot be elected.  Accordingly, Sary Karanofsky, the third-place vote-getter, is elected.
+
As these were the only two registered candidates by the October 15 deadline, both win places on the CC by acclamation.

Rules Governing Canadian Committee Elections

Each year two CC positions will expire on December 31. Prior to that date, there will be a nomination period for new candidates (lasting from September 1 to October 15). During that time, all Canadian NASPA members in good standing may nominate themselves or have others nominate them to run for election to the CC. The incumbents may also seek re-election.

SPECIAL NOTE: On August 30, 2013, the CC voted to not allow any Canadians who live outside of Canada to run in a CC election. Because of the regional organization of the CC, it was determined that an expatriate would have an unfair advantage in an election over resident Canadians because he/she would not be subject to the maximum and minimum membership quotas of the regions.

Each year the CC election period will run from November 1 to November 30. All Canadian NASPA members in good standing may vote in this election. An online voting system will be instituted. (The CC will appoint a returning officer responsible for receiving and counting ballots cast by voters who prefer to vote by paper ballot.) All votes must be received by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on November 30.

Each voter may vote for as many as two candidates on the ballot, but may only submit one ballot (online, email or paper).

There is no limit to the number of candidates allowed to seek election each year. If an election ends in a tie that must be broken, a runoff election will be held. Deadlines to submit votes will be announced as necessary. If the runoff election ends in a tie, a lottery or coin toss will be used to break the tie.

Any disputes about the elections process will be decided by the CC members (excluding those running for re-election).

2019 Canadian Committee Election Process

Nominations can be accepted by anyone on the CC from October 20 through October 31. The election itself (if necessary) runs through the entire month of November.

If you nominate someone else, we must confirm that the person actually wants to run in the election. If you nominate yourself, your name goes directly onto the ballot. Incumbents are allowed to run for reelection.

Andy Saunders was reelected by acclamation, and Jillian Bathgate was elected for the first time by acclamation. We thank Joshua Sokol for supervising this process.

2018 Canadian Committee Election Process

The nomination period ran from September 1 through October 15. Four nominations were received by the Committee, two third-party nominations and two self-nominations. Though numerous attempts by telephone and email were made to contact one of the third-party nominees, the Committee was unable to reach the nominee and thus the nomination was effectively declined. The other third-party nominee accepted the nomination. When it became apparent that there would be an election, one of the three candidates withdrew their nomination, leaving two candidates who have been acclaimed to the Canadian Committee for the term running from 2019 to 2021. Congratulations to Joshua Sokol (Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces) and Colin Viebrock (Western Canada/Territories) whose terms will begin January 1, 2019. (Due to Joshua being one of the nominees, I was the Returning Officer for the process.)

2017 Canadian Committee Election Process

The nomination process for the 2017 CC Election began on September 1 and ended at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on October 15. All Canadian-based NASPA members in good standing were eligible to nominate themselves or other Canadian-based NASPA members for election. The actual election period, had it been needed, would have run from November 1 to November 30.

The three-year terms of both Andy Saunders and Siri Tillekeratne are expiring on December 31, 2017. Each was eligible to run for re-election. The following two people registered to be candidates:

  • Jason Broersma (Ontario)
  • Siri Tillekeratne (Western Canada/Territories)

As these were the only two registered candidates by the October 15 deadline, both win places on the CC by acclamation.

Agenda

The Committee has the following items on its agenda:

  • Organizing and administering 2019 CC Election.
  • Explore ideas for including CSW play at the CNSC
  • Prepare qualification systems for international invitational competitions

Recent activity

  • The Committee worked on drafts of a poll to be sent to all Canadian NASPA players to garner their opinions on how the Canadian National Scrabble Championship tournament can be improved.
