CNSC 2003 Information for Players

This page will be updated frequently from now until the beginning of the event. Please be sure to check it before you set out for the championship.

Arriving Late

You must arrive on Friday between 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. in order to register for the event. If you are not present at 7:00 P.M., your place may be given to an alternate player. If you are delayed en route, especially on Friday evening, please call John Chew at (416) 876-7675.

The Playing Venue

This year's Championship is at the Ontario Club at 30 Wellington Street West, not at the Arts & Letters Club as in past years. Please check the directions to make sure you know how to get to the event.

Smoking is not forbidden within the club, but we will keep the playing area smoke-free, and if we cannot find a suitably isolated smoking area within the club, we may have to ask smokers to take the elevators five storeys back to ground level and make scheduling allowances accordingly. Please check at registration time to see what arrangements have been made.

During some parts of our schedule, there may be other groups using other parts of the club facilities. Please keep the traditional atmosphere of the club in mind when you're in its public areas. You are not expected to conform to a dress code, but if you dress more formally than a tournament T-shirt and jeans, you may feel less overdressed at this event than at others.

Equipment

I had ordered special event Protiles, but as of Thursday it looks like they're lost or delayed in the mail. If they arrive after the event, I will arrange to have them mailed out to every player.

We will provide and ask you to use: official playing boards. We will have available for you to use if you do not prefer your own: racks and scoresheets. We ask that you bring your own: tile bags, game timers and (since it doesn't look like we'll have them in time) Protiles.

Meals

We will be providing food at the reception Friday night, breakfast each morning of the event, and lunch for finalists and staff on Monday. Lunch is not included on Saturday or Sunday, but the Ontario Club offers a $20 lunch (tax and gratuity included) each day for anyone who does not want to leave the playing area or bring their own lunch. You must pay for this at registration time, and since they may ask us for a head count a few days in advance, please e-mail me (John Chew) if you know now that you will be eating with us. The menu for Saturday lunch is as follows: soup of the day, chicken schnitzel with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables with a fresh fruit cup for dessert, soft drinks, coffee and tea. The menu for Sunday lunch is: Baby green salad, selection of open-face sandwiches, roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, creme caramel, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

Fast weekend lunch options are otherwise somewhat limited in the neighbourhood. Shopsy's Deli at 33 Yonge Street and Movenpick Marche at 42 Yonge Street are a block away and open for lunch each day.

You're on your own for dinner Saturday night. Sunday night, we may try to organize an informal dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Registration

Registration is from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday. As mentioned above, you must arrive during that time or call John at 416-876-7675 if you do not wish to be replaced by an alternate player. At registration time, you will be asked to sign a copy of the tournament rules, pay for your lunches (if you want to eat at the Ontario Club), confirm that your NSA membership is current (and renew if not),

Event Coverage

Event coverage will be similar to that of the ALL*STARS Championship and be provided by Sherrie Saint John, John Chew and a group of game annotators. Please encourage your club members, friends and family to follow your progress over the weekend.

Guests, Visitors, Friends, Family...

As at past events, guests and visitors are welcome to view the playing room and games in progress, after identifying themselves to tournament staff, and as long as they do not interfere in any way with the players. As mentioned above, please also encourage anyone interested to follow your progress throughout the championship at this web site. If your family needs to contact you in an emergency, they may do so by calling John Chew at (416) 876-7675.
