CNSC 2003: Getting there by car

The Canadian SCRABBLE Championship will be held at the Ontario Club, on the fifth floor of Commerce Court South, on the north side of Wellington Street West, between Yonge Street and Bay Street. This web page describes how to get there by car, assuming you want to park underground at Commerce Court. If you want to save money by parking further away, you can do so and follow the instructions on how to get to the tournament on foot. In general, parking gets cheaper fastest if you look eastward. Don't park on the street on blocks with parking machines: they run even on Sundays, and you won't be able to get to them often enough to avoid a ticket. If you want to park for free, you may be able to do so on some residential blocks east of Jarvis, a ten- or fifteen-minute walk from the event.

The street address of the Ontario Club is 30 Wellington Street West. (You can use this to find it in your favorite on-line map site.) Wellington Street is one-way westbound, and the Ontario Club is between Yonge Street and Bay Street. To get to it, take the Gardiner Expressway to Yonge Street, drive north on Yonge Street, turn left on Wellington Street and look for the Commerce Court parking entrance right away on your right. If you can't turn left onto Wellington (it may not be legal at all times of the day), drive on past it up Yonge Street until you can turn right, drive east to Church Street, turn right (south) down Church Street to Wellington, turn right (west) onto Wellington and keep an eye out for the parking as soon as you cross Yonge Street. That's the easy part. The tricky part is getting from the parking garage to the playing site. First, here's how much parking at the site costs:

In the parking garage, look for the west elevators:

Depending on the time of day, you may be able to take the elevator all the way to level 'C' (street level). If so, you're in luck. Do so, turn right as you leave the elevator and follow the instructions for getting there on foot or wheelchair from the north. If not, go to level 'CC' (the shopping concourse) and read on.

As you exit the elevator, turn right and approach the food court:

As soon as you can, turn right and then look on your left for glass doors labelled "Commerce Court South". Go through them:

Go up the escalator, or take the wheelchair elevator on the left:

If you're on the stairs, turn around to your left and go up another flight:

At the top of the stairs, turn right and go through the glass door to the Commerce Court South elevator lobby:

Take any of the elevators to the fifth floor:

On the fifth floor, follow directions within the club to the reception room (to the right) or the playing room (to the left).
