Round 26 Commentary

Alan Stern just came back from lunch. He is 2-2 today. I asked him how he was. He said, "I started off mediocre and I kinda went sideways."

Natalie Liebman (FL) stopped by to tell me that earlier in the tournament she was paired with Charles Merlis (NY) and they tied. Today they were paired again and they tied AGAIN! 354 417

Julia Bogle-Karnes (Division 3) just stopped by. She is having a devestating tournament. She is in Division 3 and her luck has not been good. She has 8 wins, 5 of them in the first day. Julia has been playing competetive SCRABBLE® for 16 months and started with a rating of 632. With much studying and online play against any expert who will give her the time of day, she has improved her play enormously. She entered this tournament rated 1204 and she fears she won't be going up. It just goes to show, that sometimes no matter how much you study, your cup is half-empty. She apologizes for crying when she is overwhelmed, but the disappointment has been terrible.

Teresa Schaeffer (DC) just stopped by. She is in 6th place, half a game from first place. She is very happy. Her grin goes all the way across her face. It is delightful to see. She says, "I am so excited to be here, so excited to be playing, and happy to be doing so well."

Joel Horn (MA) had a roller coaster game in Division 1 with Anne Hay two or so games ago. He was behind by 115 and caught up in two moves to go up by 88. His two plays were OXIDE for 82 and QUAyLIKE for 113. Unfortunately, he lost on an out-bingo of ELOINERS by Anne for 77. He lost by 20 points. He was crushed.
