On May 19th, 20th and 21st, 1978, 65 players from across North America competed for $8400 in prizes and the glory of being crowned the first North American SCRABBLE Champion in the North American Invitational SCRABBLE Players Tournament.
After an opening reception on Thursday evening (May 18th), players played seven games Friday, six games Saturday and three games Sunday under the direction of TD Joel Skolnick. Clocks were set to twenty minutes per player, the word reference was Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary, 1973-74 edition and a special set of tournament rules governed the event. Players were ranked according to credits (3 for a win, 1.5 for a tie, 0 for a loss, 1 for every 50 points scored, 1 for every 50 points of winning game spread), with ties broken by wins and average score.
(Subsequent NSCs used the OSPD, the first edition of which was released in 1978, and ranked players based on wins, losses and cumulative spread.)
